Former Sports Journalist and Suspended General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Kwabena Agyei Agyapong has stated that the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) has got no mandate to order Ghana to kowtow to its demands.
According to him, the world football establishment is, in itself, subject to the laws of Switzerland where it is headquartered, and so does not have the power to override the laws of that country. The veteran politician wondered why, in the light of the above fact, FIFA always wants to dictate to other sovereign nations such as Ghana.
He was giving his opinion on the state of Ghanaian football in the light of startling revelations of bribery and corruption brought to light by undercover investigative journalist, Anas Aremyaw Anas in his latest work regarding the sporting fraternity.
Speaking on Point Blank, a radio show aired by Accra – based Citi FM on Thursday, 7th June, 2018, the former Press Secretary to the president during Ex-president Kufuor’s administration said that Ghana needs to revisit the former way of handling football where the president came out with nominees out of which one was to be elected to man the football administration. In those days, according to Mr. Agyapong, government had a hand in how football was run in the country; adding that the state of football administration as it is today is as a result of FIFA’s interference that sought to insulate football administration from governmental control.
He, therefore, proposed that Ghana restructures its football system in a way that would make football administration be at par with the other sporting disciplines and placed under the National Sports Council (NSC) even if that would make the country incur the wrath of FIFA.
