Outspoken Businessman and Member of Parliament (MP) for the Assin Central Constituency, Hon. Kennedy Ohene Agyepong has bemoaned the soaring rate of import duties charged at the ports.
When he took his turn as a panel member on Adom TV’s breakfast show, Bedwem, Mr. Agyepong, on Monday, 18th December, 2018, admonished government to go the same way that countries like Dubai and Singapore have gone, which he also described as “the Ken Agyepong way.” That is, reducing taxes with the aim of getting more people into the tax bracket in order to increase revenue.
He took a swipe at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for its latest statement of praise for the Ghanaian economy. According to him, whenever the IMF praises Ghana for being on a sound economic footing, same has led to the loss of elections by the party in power, in this case, the New Patriotic Party (NPP). He, therefore, called on the Nana Addo-led administration to ensure that the economic growth actually reflects in the pockets of the ordinary Ghanaian.
Mr. Agyepong, who said some members of his party, during Former President Kufuor’s administration, reported him to the then president for making same statements, was eventually exonerated as the then ruling party lost the succeeding election. In the same way, he requested the current administration to do something about these tax hikes to ensure her continuity in government.
